The Benefits of Cooking with Olive Oil
Olive oil has been a staple in many Mediterranean dishes for thousands of years, but it's only recently that are we are learning all of the healthy benefits to olive oil has to offer. Recent research has shown that cooking with olive oil can improve our health and everyday lives.
Rich in antioxidants. Olive oil is rich in vitamin E and contains many antioxidants also found in fresh fruits and vegetables. Extra virgin olive oil that has not been industry treated has an even higher amount vitamin E and antioxidants, and is currently being tested as a cancer prevention treatment. Olive oil contains a nutrient that mimics the effects of ibuprofen and reduces inflammation which could aid in the treatment and prevention of breast cancer.
Lowers blood pressure. People who regularly consume olive oil have been shown to have lower blood pressure and a decreased chance of having a stroke than those who do not consume any at all. The mono-saturated fats found in olive oil have been found delay the aging of arteries in the heart, contributing to lower blood pressure and helping prevent strokes.
Helps fight osteoporosis. Olive oil has been shown to improve bone mineralization and helps your body absorb calcium, which helps prevent the onset of osteoporosis as well as aiding individuals who are currently living with it.
Helps fight obesity. Although high in calories, olive oil contains the "good fats" called mono-saturated fats which aid in the prevention of obesity and help prevent diabetes. Studies have shown that a Mediterranean style diet that's rich in olive oil reduced the risk of type II diabetes by almost 50 percent compared to a strictly low fat diet.
